In answer to her doorbell, Chia Ellis opened her door to the kindest face she had ever seen. There was quiet elegance in the black dress of the middle-aged lady, but the look of goodness in her eyes made all else blur into the limbo of mediocrity. She seemed to be summoning her reserve courage to force her to come into the room when the look of fear came into her face as a strange companion to the kindness there.
Her first words were fast as though she had been practicing them. “Madge Thompson told me to come here to see you. She said…” Then looking around at the pleasant room lined with books and the young woman in front of her, she faltered. “But I must be in the wrong place. I’ve never been in this part of town before. Please excuse me.”
